Hearing the World Differently: My Journey with a Cochlear Implant 🦻

For 28 years, I relied on hearing aids to navigate the world. Then, I watched how much my son’s cochlear implant transformed his life, and I knew it was time to take that leap for myself.

Getting a cochlear implant was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s given me access to sounds I never fully experienced before, from conversations to music to the little everyday moments that many take for granted.

Being deaf has never defined me, how I adapt, grow, and thrive does. And today, I’m doing more with my life than ever before.

But remember, every deaf person is different. Some wear hearing aids, some have cochlear implants, and some don’t use any devices at all. The most important thing is to respect and learn what works best for each individual. Inclusivity starts with understanding 💙

Yoga has become a passion of mine, but as a deaf person, I’ve learned that communication is key to making the practice truly inclusive. Before every class, I take a moment to speak with the instructor. This isn’t just for my benefit, it helps them too! It eases communication, allows them to be more aware of my needs, and makes me feel included in the space.

During class, I adapt. I watch the instructor, glance at the people next to me, and when in downward dog, I look behind me to stay connected with the flow. Yoga is about finding balance, and I’ve found my own way to make it work.

That said, not every experience has been smooth. I’ve had moments where an instructor wasn’t accessible or seemed to panic. But instead of letting frustration take over, I choose patience. I give them another chance, and if it still doesn’t work, I move on. There are plenty of instructors out there who are comfortable and willing to teach people with hearing loss.

Remember, if you want to try something new but you feel out of your comfort zone, speak to the instructor before class helps, everyone is in the same boat!

Lately, I’ve found attending events and networking more difficult, and I’m not entirely sure why. Having BSL interpreters during my course made me realise how much I was truly included, hearing everything, engaging fully, and not just getting by.

But outside of that setting, even though I can lipread and speak to people, larger events feel overwhelming. I know I can arrange BSL interpreters, but for informal events, it’s tricky, plans change last minute, and accessibility isn’t always guaranteed. It’s frustrating knowing what full inclusion feels like and then struggling in spaces where it’s not the same.

Which is why I’m trying to promote deaf awareness because it’s the little things that make a difference. Just being aware, making small adjustments, and ensuring inclusion truly helps us.

Throwback to The Script concert last year! 🎶

It was such an unforgettable experience to share this with my sister. She’s hearing, and for so long it’s been hard to do things like this together because so many events weren’t accessible for the Deaf community. I used to reach out to concerts about accessibility, only to be told they couldn’t provide it.

But times are changing. Deaf awareness is growing, thanks to TV, Deaf reality stars, public figures, and so many amazing people sharing their hearing loss journeys. Concerts are starting to get it. More and more, we’re seeing BSL interpreters on stage, proof that inclusion matters.

This concert wasn’t just about music, it was about feeling seen, heard, and included. Accessibility isn’t just a ‘nice-to-have’ it changes lives.

Let’s keep pushing for a world where everyone can fully belong. 💛

A little introduction 👋

I thought I’d take a moment to introduce myself and share what this page is all about. I’ve had a journey that took me from school and college, where I earned my qualifications in graphic design, to working as a designer for a local authority, and eventually becoming a business owner. Along the way, I’ve gained so much experience and insight, particularly on how I can support both the deaf and hearing communities.

Inclusivity, accessibility, and mindset are important to me. It hasn’t been easy, I’ve faced plenty of challenges but I’ve learned to adapt.

In the midst of a noisy, busy world, nature offers me the opportunity for silence 🌿 Every walk, every quiet moment, helps me reconnect with myself and refocus my energy. It’s where I find peace and gratitude, away from constant buzz.

For someone like me, who experiences concentration fatigue daily, nature is sanctuary, a place where my mind can rest.

🎵 Music is more than just sound, it’s about connection.

Growing up, I loved going to concerts and feeling the beats, but understanding the lyrics? That was a struggle. It was all about vibes with friends and family, but something was missing.

Now, with captions on music app @amazonmusicuk and BSL interpreters at concerts, I can fully experience music. Seeing the words, connecting them to the artist and the beats through my cochlear implant, it’s like a miracle. 🌟

Here’s a glimpse of how I enjoy music now, feeling the rhythm, reading the lyrics, and loving every second. Technology and accessibility have made it possible for me to enjoy music just like everyone else! 💜

I am so excited for the future of young deaf children and how inclusive it’s going to be. It’s important for me to share this because I only found out last year how it all works. The more I share my experiences, the more I can show that there is access out there for everyone.

I treated myself to a much-needed facial with the lovely Alison at @premierbeauty.biz

Her home salon is so calming and zen, truly the perfect little escape from the chaos of everyday life. Self-care like this is so important to me, especially when I need to fully switch off and relax.

As a deaf person, I’ve sometimes found it hard in the past to fully let go during treatments. I’d feel nervous or hesitant to shut my eyes completely, always on edge. But with Alison, it’s different. She creates such a comfortable and safe environment that I can fully relax without a second thought. It’s amazing how much of a difference that makes.

I know I haven’t been great at staying consistent on social media, but I keep reminding myself that’s okay. I’m busy being a mum of two, working on my business, and most importantly, finding time to take care of myself, whether it’s going to the gym or practicing self-care.

Social media can be tricky because I love staying connected with family, friends, and celebrating other people’s successes. But wasting my day scrolling or seeing negativity online makes me want to switch off.

I’ve been experimenting and found that most of my work actually comes through word of mouth rather than social media. I could probably get more work if I focused more on social media, but there’s only one of me, and I have my boundaries.

I just wanted to share this message as a reminder to do what works for you and to always take care of yourself.

Although the day has passed, the reminder is just as important: Take a moment to check in on the people around you. Mental health affects us all, whether we see it or not. Sometimes, just a simple “How are you?” can make all the difference in someone’s day.

So, reach out. Text a friend, call a family member, check in on your colleagues. Let them know you care, because we’re all in this together. 💬✨

Behind this picture is someone who didn’t feel like working out. I booked a class this morning at 7:10am but couldn’t bring myself to go. Why? I had a lot on my mind and kept making excuses. So, I changed my plans, met a friend for coffee, and booked a 12:15pm class to try again. And yes, I went and I feel so much better for it.

My content is changing. Hence my sweaty face, this is the real me. This time, I’ll be sharing more about me being deaf, and my social media will reflect my real life: fitness, wellness, mental health, and so much more ❤️

Hey everyone, I’m back with some big changes! 🎉 Before summer, I was feeling overwhelmed trying to balance too many ideas and accounts on social media. I thought I could juggle it all, sharing my experience as a deaf business owner and graphic designer while trying to be everything to everyone. But honestly, it was too much. I needed a break to reconnect with myself.

This summer, I took time off to focus on my kids and make some incredible memories. It was exactly what I needed. Now, I’m ready to return to what I truly love, my work as a graphic designer.

What an amazing experience at @pink concert! Hannah’s first concert and my first time having a BSL interpreter. I stopped going to concerts as I couldn’t really hear the words just the beats but now having an interpreter I could follow all of the songs and found my love for music at concerts again and I can share this with my daughter as music is her happy place 🥹 Thanks @performanceinterpreting 💖

Why have I created this group?

I want to help business owners understand how they can better serve their clients or customers by being deaf-aware, inclusive, and accessible. You never know when you might meet a deaf person, and instead of feeling unprepared or worried, you’ll be ready because you have equipped yourself with the necessary tools.

With my background in running businesses, my 13 years of corporate experience, and being deaf since birth, I will be able to provide you with proper training.

Throwback to Easter holidays in Crieff! Missing those cosy evenings by the log burner 😂 not having to worry about anything.

Can’t forget the thrill of hitting the bike trails, especially the Cookie Monster trail! Felt like a kid again. Already planning to tackle the difficult trail next time. When we were there we had a lovely chat with a staff member about a talented mountain biker with a cochlear implant. This got me thinking that’s why the man was very careful putting the helmet on my son as his cochlear implants usually falls off when you put a helmet on. But it didn’t and he was very careful.

Love when people recognise, celebrate talent regardless of differences and is deaf aware. Made our experience relaxing and enjoyable too.

Hey, as you know in the last few weeks, I’ve been reflecting on the purpose of my social media presence and how I can make a difference.

There’s so much I want to share, but I’ve decided to focus solely on my journey as a deaf business owner and as a mum of two. However, this post is about honesty. I want to open up about how, as a deaf person, I often find myself comparing, especially on social media – something I know I shouldn’t do. It’s similar to comparing oneself to others’ fitness or success.

This realisation led me to redefine my boundaries, particularly on social media. Instead of endless scrolling, I’ve started meeting people for coffee, fostering accountability and motivation. It’s amazing how much of a difference it makes to have someone else cheering you on.

So, I just want to remind you that you’re doing amazing. Set boundaries, take time offline to pursue activities you love – whether it’s going for a walk, swimming, painting, or anything else.

Just been to the gym and now reading a book in the sunshine having lush tropical colada smoothie.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend filled with beautiful sunshine. I will be putting my phone in a drawer and make most of this lovely weather with my children ☀️

Yesterday, I was enjoying the sauna and steam room at my local gym. It was incredibly relaxing. It occurred to me that I had no idea what the sounds were like in there, as I don’t wear my cochlear implant, and everything is silent, which is lovely. However, I do sometimes look around in case someone tries to talk to me. Just a quick note to remember: if you speak to someone and they don’t respond, there’s a reason for it, and they’re not being rude. It’s really hard for us to communicate without our cochlear implants or hearing aids.

One question: what are the sounds like in both the sauna and steam room? I am curious 😂
